IMC has reorganized – new name, same abbreviation

Press release, published 2016-12-19

IMC has now become the Institute of Intellectual Property, Marketing and Competition Law, to underline its leading position within its areas of activity. By becoming an institute IMC has received its first board, consisting of academics, practitioners and judges.

- It is vital to highlight the important work that IMC does, both nationally and internationally. It has therefore been crucial to further develop IMC’s structural form, says Sanna Wolk, Chair of IMC.

Since 2012 Uppsala University has aspired to becoming the centre of Swedish intellectual property research and that same year IMC was founded by Associate Professor Sanna Wolk. The whole initiative is funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation together with the Faculty of Law at the university. IMC is a vehicle through which a new platform has been created to connect academia with the judicial and practicing world. IMC has rapidly become one of Sweden’s most prominent education and research environments.

- It is amazing that the Wallenberg Foundation together with Uppsala University are investing in intellectual property law research. The protection of intellectual property is crucial for facilitating growth and innovation, says Stojan Arnerstål, Director of IMC.

The Institute’s aim is to be a strong research platform, to create and develop a dynamic IP law research environment. One key aspect is knowledge exchange and close cooperation with the legal profession outside academic circles. For this reason IMC’s first board consists of academics, practitioners and judges; which are Sanna Wolk (Chair), Stojan Arnerstål (Director), Bengt Domeij and Vladimir Bastidas at IMC, Jonas Westerberg (Lindahl), Ann Danared (Brann), Susanna Zeko (ICC), Nina Ebkar (Electrolux), Susanne Abbefalk (Sveriges radio), Per Carlson and Peter Strömberg (Patent and Market Court of Appeals). The secretary of  IMC is Kacper Szkalej.

- It is important that IMC’s activity is anchored in the practical legal sphere, which is why we have opted for a board consisting of a wide variety of academics, practicing lawyers, judges and patent attorneys, in order to create a dialogue between academic life and the world around it, continues Sanna Wolk.
